Engineering geology - one of the branches of geology which investigates the geological environment, its variability and evolution for the purpose of land use and regional planning as well as building object design, construction and exploitation. Engineering geology assesses water and land conditions for foundations of building objects.

Geotechnics - is a narrower term than geology. Geotechnics focuses on the soil substratum structure and makes soil investigations for the purpose of earthen and underground structures, foundations and road surface planning and construction. It is an interdisciplinary science which makes use of soil science, soil mechanics, foundation, geology - in particular engineering geology, chemistry, physics, building mechanics, rheology, etc.

Is soil investigation obligatory? The provisions of the Polish Building Code do not clearly oblige you to make any soil investigation in the case of one- or two two-storeyed building foundations which belong to the first geotechnical categoryj.

Why is it worth to make a soil investigation? - geotechnical investigations assess the utility of the soil substratum for the projected investment and enable a correct and safe foundation planning. Disadvantageous soil and water conditions may significantly overprice the construction or even make the fulfilment of the project impossible. The cost of investigation is very low in relation to the benefits it brings.

Geological documentation - is managed by geologists on the basis of field research. It consists of geotechnical sections of boreholes, a map with marked points in which the investigations were made, information about the groundwater level, charts, conclusions and recommendations for the foundation of the building.
